Writing Highway

A Complete Writing Program That Takes Students
from Developing to Proficient Writers

A Writing Roadmap That Starts With the Fundamentals

Writing Highway is a roadmap to writing for grades 2 through 8 that teaches essential writing skills in a step-by-step linear approach. A national team of curriculum experts wrote the program directly to K-8 College and Career Writing Standards and grade-level state standards (DOK 1-4).

A Journey That’s Easy to Navigate

Many writing programs are overly complicated, both to teach and to learn. Our lessons are direct, straightforward, and easy to use. We’re proud to offer a skill-building journey with concise directions to ensure no steps are missed and no one gets lost.

A Final Destination – Proficient Writers

Other writing programs claim to teach students the essentials of writing. Yet, several studies have shown that students’ overall writing performance is declining, making it apparent that something is not working.  Our new program ensures every writing skill is effectively taught, practiced, and understood before moving to more advanced instruction. Writing Highway provides a final destination – life-long writing proficiency.

Five Stops to Proficient Writing

Every stop provides multiple opportunities for students to use prompts, graphic organizers, and rubrics. This supports students on their writing journey to become proficient writers.

The journey begins with eight basic writing skills lessons and two assessments that teach all the elements of these important writing genres: Opinion/Argument, Informative/Explanatory, and Narrative.

Prepared with the basic writing skills, the next destination is the writing process. Writing process lessons teach students to develop and strengthen writing by planning, prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, and producing a final product.

In the next leg, students use the knowledge the knowledge they’ve learned along the way. Each independent writing activity includes a prompt, a graphic organizer, and a rubric. An independent writing activity requires students to apply research and use technology in their writing.

The journey continues with writing performance lessons.  These are an integral part of the writing process and an opportunity to formatively assess the content knowledge and acquired skills from the previous lessons.

The writing project integrates skills from multiple language arts standards and compels students to conduct longer range research so they can routinely write coherent, substantial, and factual compositions. Writing projects integrate knowledge from other language arts standards.
